Arc'teryx est une entreprise canadienne fondée en 1991 à North Vancouver en Colombie-Britannique, plus particulièrement spécialisée dans les vêtements et équipements haut de gamme pour les sports de montagne, ainsi que les courses de trail. Son nom ainsi que son logo se réfèrent au « spécimen berlinois » de l'archæoptéryx, l'un des tout premiers oiseaux préhistoriques connus.

Le charpentier David Lane souhaite créer des baudriers d'escalade plus confortables2. L'entreprise, fabriquant initialement des produits d'escalade, est fondée par le financier Jeremy Guard, qui en devient le président, et David Lane2. La marque se fait connaître avec un harnais d'escalade intitulé le Vapor, utilisant une technologie de lamination à chaud : celui-ci deviendra le produit le plus populaire d'Arc'teryx et la technologie sera utilisée pour d'autres produits les années suivantes. Dès 1992 apparaissent les premiers sacs à dos3. Au milieu des années 1990, après avoir obtenu une licence de fabrication de la part de WL Gore and Associates pour utiliser le tissu Gore-Tex, Arc'teryx développe une gamme de vêtements pour l'extérieur2,3. Au cours des années, les produits de la marque reçoivent de nombreuses récompenses de la part de la presse spécialisée anglo-saxonne, tel que Backpacker (en), Outside, Climbing (en), Men's Journal (en), ou Powder3…

 

Vêtements d'Arc'teryx

Huit ans après sa création, l'entreprise, qui a besoin de locaux plus grands, déménage à Burnaby dans le district régional du Grand Vancouver ; elle retournera à North Vancouver, son lieu d'origine, quelques années plus tard.

Au début des années 2000, Arc'teryx est acheté par Salomon, qui appartient alors à Adidas1 depuis quelques années3. Les deux fondateurs quittent la marque2 ; celle-ci, à la suite du rachat, acquiert alors une plus grande liberté financière et s'étend sur le marché européen3. Adidas cède l'entreprise canadienne quatre ans plus tard au groupe finlandais Amer Sports. Le siège ainsi qu'une partie de la fabrication2 restent, au cours de toutes ces années, au Canada, l'entreprise conservant son indépendance2,3. Par la suite, Arc'teryx qui est distribuée par des détaillants multi-marques ouvre son premier magasin en nom propre à Montréal4, puis cinq en Asie ainsi que le premier en Europe, en Angleterre, au milieu de l'année 20135.

De nos jours, les produits Arc'teryx, sont habituellement associés à l'escalade, le ski, le surf des neiges, ou les courses de trail, avec la ligne de sacs à dos plus particulièrement connue3. Mais la marque développe également une ligne de produits, Arc'teryx LEAFn 1, pour les marchés de police2 et des forces armées. Que ce soit des produits spécifiques ou une déclinaison de ceux existants, les modèles sont le plus souvent de couleurs neutres, ou camouflage, et sont aux spécifications des normes militaires. En parallèle, Arc'teryx utilise ses chutes de tissus en Gore-Tex pour fabriquer des capes destinées aux sans domicile fixe6,7.

La marque, qualifiée d'« ultratechnique2,8 », sponsorise quelques compétitions atypiques tel que l'Afghan Ski Challenge2,9, ou la course de trail Squamish 5010.

Arc'teryx (stylized ɅRC'TERYX) is a global design company based in North Vancouver, British Columbia, specializing in technical high-performance apparel, outerwear and equipment.

The name and logo of Arc'teryx refer to Archaeopteryx, one of the first birds and a transitional form between earlier dinosaurs and modern birds. The logo, designed by graphic designer Micheal Hofler, is based on the "Berlin specimen", a fossil of the bird, the most complete skeleton found to date.

Products are sold at more than 3,000 retail locations worldwide in addition to over eighty Arc’teryx owned and operated retail locations globally, with these key cities: Vancouver, Toronto, Calgary, New York, Seattle, Beijing, Hong Kong, Tokyo, London and have a retail presence in key resorts of Vail, Chamonix, Whistler.

The Global headquarters and design centre are located in North Vancouver, with a local manufacturing facility called ARC’One, located in New Westminster. There are overseas teams located in Munich, Shanghai and Tokyo.

There are more than 1,000 employees in North America (not including retail, sales representatives and dealer services) and more than 1,200 employees globally.

Company history[edit]

Originally named Rock Solid by founder Dave Lane, the company's first line of products was climbing gear. Dave Lane sold his 50% interest to Blair Murdoch and Tim Duholke who became silent partners in 1989. Then-principal Jeremy Guard changed the company name to "Arc'teryx" in 1991 to reflect the company's vision of creating disruptive "evolutionary" innovation within the outdoor products industry. Using a heat laminate (thermolamination) technology, the partners designed and marketed the Vapor harness, which would become the company's most popular item. In 1993, after a series of relocations and staff additions, Arc'teryx released the Bora backpack using the same Vapor technology. In 1996, after obtaining a license from W. L. Gore & Associates for use of the GORE-TEX fabric, the company adapted it for its new line of outdoor technical apparel.[citation needed]

Needing a larger manufacturing space, the company moved its headquarters to Burnaby, British Columbia, in 1999. In 2005, the Arc'teryx head office moved back across the Burrard Inlet to North Vancouver.

Guard was president and principal of the company from 1991 through 2001. In January 2001, Arc'teryx was purchased by the Adidas-owned Salomon Group.[3] In May 2005, Amer Sports purchased the Salomon Group from Adidas.[4] Since 2019, the Amer Sports Corporation is owned by the Chinese group Anta Sports, with sister brands Wilson, Atomic, Sports Tracker, Salomon, Precor, Suunto. The Arc'teryx head office is still located in North Vancouver and harnesses, backpacks, and other apparel is made in its own factory in New Westminster, BC. Their apparel line has expanded, thus Arc'teryx has consequently outsourced to plants in China, the Philippines, Vietnam, Bangladesh, El Salvador, Laos, and Greece.[5]

Arc'teryx product list is over 500 items. Their lifetime warranty covers the reasonable lifespan of each.[6]

Product collections are activity-based:[7] Rock Climbing and Alpinism; Skiing and Snowboarding; Hiking and Trekking; Trail Running; and Everyday for technical urban; Essentials are most versatile garments and best sales.[8]

Legacy family products names are made of a Greek letter. The nomenclature usually follows garment names nod to the weather and the impulse activity they are designed to withstand. AR stands for “All-Round”, MX for “Mixed Use”, LT for “Lightweight”, SL for “Super Lightweight.” and FL for "Fast and light".[8]

Arc'teryx's flagship jacket, the Alpha SV, was first introduced in 1998. At the time, it brought innovation to the outdoor industry and was recognized as one of the most advanced alpine climbing shells on the market, [9][10] using GORE-TEX's breathable waterproof technology, WaterTight zippers and microseams with narrow seam tape for lightness. The Alpha SV has been updated incrementally over the years, remaining Arc'teryx's most recognized piece due to its reputation as one of the most durable and well-designed hardshells in the industry.

Other top selling items in their clothing line include the Beta AR jacket, the Atom LT hoody, and Gamma MX jacket. Over the years, Arc'teryx's designs have won a number of awards from Backpacker, Outside, Climbing, Men's Journal, and Powder magazines.[3]

Subsidiaries and programs[edit]

Veilance[edit]

Founded by Arc'teryx Equipment in 2009, Veilance is a men's and women's clothing label that applies minimalist design and advanced technical construction to its line of city focused apparel. Based in Canada's west coast mountains, Veilance engineers performance garments for every climate and environment.[11]

LEAF[edit]

Arc'teryx LEAF (Law Enforcement and Armed Forces) designs and builds technical apparel and gear for elite military and specialized law enforcement users in NATO and NATO-friendly countries.

Although some items are counterparts in design to their civilian models, other items, such as Arc'teryx's Tango and Charlie packs, are made in camouflage patterns and constructed to military specification, including numerous PALS-type attachment loops and fabric featuring neutral and camouflage coloring. LEAF started in 2003 when the United States Marine Corps chose Arc'teryx's design for their new backpack, the ILBE. Inspired by the Bora backpack, Arc'teryx brought new technologies such as thermoformed hip-belts and shoulder straps, along with V-stay suspension to comfortably handle expedition-sized loads.

Arc'teryx LEAF customers include units working in counter-terrorism, counter-insurgency, foreign internal defence, and hostage rescue.

Recommerce Program[edit]

Launched in 2019, Arc'teryx Used Gear[12] is the official used gear trade program where customers can give back their garments in exchange for a refund in the shop. The company repairs and refurbishes used products and put them back on sale on a dedicated second-hand market place. This augments the life cycle of the products, allows new customers to access more affordable high-quality equipment and reduce their impact on the planet by not extracting new resources for manufacturing new apparel. This program is only available in the United States and Canada for now, with plans to expand to Europe. [13]

Arc'teryx Academies[edit]

Arc’teryx Academies have hosted professionally guided clinics, educational seminars, film premiers and athlete speakers in key cities around the world including Chamonix, Fr, Squamish, BC and Jackson Hole, WY since 2008. Bringing together over 1,200 people annually, Academies focus on sports including climbing, backcountry skiing, and ski mountaineering for beginners to experts. Academies provide skill developments and education from Arc'teryx athletes and guides.[14]

Arc'teryx Athletes[edit]

Arc’teryx Athletes program sponsors both grass roots and well-established professional athletes by offering personal and professional development. As members of the Arc'teryx family, athletes trust Arc'teryx gear to perform when they need it most. The athlete team refines products by testing prototypes, pushing their gear to the limits, and working directly with the design team on tweaks or improvements.

The Bird's Nest Project, running since 2009, is organized by a group of Arc'teryx volunteers who have made and donated almost 4,000 GORE-TEX capes for homeless and community organizations in Vancouver, BC[15]using left over fabrics from manufacturing.[citation needed]

In 2019 the company joined the Leave No Trace[16] ethics.
