HALIFAX — Police say the Nova Scotia Serious Incident Response Team is investigating the death of a man during a confrontation with officers at a residence in Dartmouth, N.S., Saturday evening.

Halifax Regional Police say they responded to a weapons call just after 8:30 p.m. involving a male with a firearm.

Investigators say the suspect had barricaded himself in a residence and officers had set up containment on it.

Nova Scotian Podcast About Domestic Violence wins International Award

They say the 59-year-old man confronted officers with a weapon while they attempted to arrest him and an officer discharged his service weapon. 

Police say the man was found dead in the residence and the incident has been referred to the Nova Scotia Serious Incident Response Team. 

They did not provide details about the identity of the victim.

Halifax is the capital and largest municipality in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia, and the largest municipality in Atlantic Canada. As of the 2021 Census, the municipal population was 439,819,[6] with 348,634 people in its urban area.[3] The regional municipality consists of four former municipalities that were amalgamated in 1996: Halifax, Dartmouth, Bedford, and Halifax County.

Halifax is a major economic centre in Atlantic Canada, with a large concentration of government services and private sector companies. Major employers and economic generators include the Department of National Defence, Dalhousie University, Nova Scotia Health Authority, Saint Mary's University, the Halifax Shipyard, various levels of government, and the Port of Halifax. Agriculture, fishing, mining, forestry, and natural gas extraction are major resource industries found in the rural areas of the municipality.
