According to police, a 14-year-old boy was at the wheel of a Toyota 4Runner, with a 16-year-old passenger also in the vehicle. It’s believed the driver made a sharp left turn while driving on a gravel road in the vicinity of 15th Street N.E. and 128th Avenue N.E. just before 7 a.m.

The driver then lost control of the vehicle, police said, and it rolled off the road before coming to rest on its passenger side.

Calgary EMS transported the passenger to hospital in critical, life-threatening condition but police say he died a short time later.

The 14-year-old driver was also taken to hospital with minor injuries. He has since been released from hospital, but was then arrested on outstanding warrants and remains in custody.

Three other teens were on the scene but they declined treatment, according to EMS spokesperson Stuart Brideaux. A CPS spokesperson confirmed there were five teens in total at the scene, including the two taken to hospital.

Police say charges are pending against the teen driver in relation to the crash. Speed is being considered as a possible factor in the crash, but not drugs or alcohol.

The investigation is continuing and police would like to speak with anyone who witnessed the crash. They can call the CPS non-emergency line at 403-266-1234 or leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers
