The Queen's coffin: The tiny details you might have missed from photos showing hearse leaving Balmoral
Rebecca Russell - 15h ago
Her Majesty The Queen's coffin left Balmoral Castle earlier today at the beginning of a six-hour journey through Scotland which will end in Edinburgh, and photos captured the moment her body was taken beyond the estate for the first time since her death. From Edinburgh, the late monarch will be flown back to London ahead of her state funeral.
The Queen died at her beloved Scottish estate at the age of 96 on Thursday, September 8 with the new King Charles and The Princess Royal by her side. The plans for the coffin procession today are laid out in Operation Unicorn - the code name used if The Queen died in Scotland - although those plans were changed slightly to see her flown home instead of by Royal Train.
Today's journey will end at the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh, and it is understood that most members of the Royal Family will travel on to Edinburgh later. Today's 175-mile journey is filled with a number of special touches to The Queen, with references to some of her favourite places in Scotland. As well as this, there are a number of details on late monarch's coffin which you may have missed.

Her Majesty The Queen's coffin is draped in the Royal Standard of Scotland and is being followed by The Princess Royal and her husband Vice Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence. It was revealed that the monarch's oak coffin - which had been placed in the ballroom at Balmoral Castle - was lifted into a hearse by six of the estate’s gamekeepers. On the side of the hearse, the name of the funeral directors can be read as William Purves.

A wreath has been placed on top of the Scottish Royal Standard which has been made from Dahlias, Sweet Peas, Phlox, White Heather and Pine Fir from the Balmoral Estate. It is understood that the remainder of The Queen's family who we saw paying their respects and thanking members of the public yesterday (Saturday, September 10) stayed behind at Balmoral Castle and plan to travel to Edinburgh to be reunited with Her Majesty's coffin before it is flown back to London.
At 10am today, the cortege began the 175-mile journey from Balmoral to make its way through Aberdeenshire, Aberdeen, Angus and Tayside before reaching Edinburgh. At the very start of the journey from the estate, the hearse passed through the town of Ballater which is where the monarch would frequently visit during her stays in Scotland.
Once in the capital, the procession will enter from the west of the city by Edinburgh Castle and down the full length of the Royal Mile to the The Palace of Holyroodhouse by about 4pm. The Queen will then lie at rest in The Palace of Holyroodhouse overnight.
On Monday (September 12), there will be a procession from the palace to St Giles Cathedral in Edinburgh where the coffin will rest for 24 hours to allow people to pay their respects. The following day The Queen's coffin will be transported by road from the cathedral to Edinburgh Airport and then flown to RAF Northolt before going on to Buckingham Palace.
