With the majority of Canada's wildfires currently burning in B.C., it was only a matter of time before the smoke plume reached the populated centres along the coast.

The B.C. South Coast has remained mostly free of wildfire smoke throughout the summer of 2022, but that's about to change.

Smoke forecasting has come a long way over the past decade. High-resolution models with relative precision forecast the smoke plume downwind of any given wildfire.

There's consensus. The Canadian and American smoke models show the larger fires west of Lytton, B.C., migrating the plume down Howe Sound and most of Metro Vancouver. The majority of the smoke will remain aloft, but some will mix down to the surface, lowering air quality as a result.

A weak thermal trough will develop across the coast by Wednesday, pulling the smoke along the pressure gradient right to the coast, siphoning it out of Howe Sound and down the myriad of inlets and valleys.

This intrusion of smoke will not be as severe or persistent as the September 2020 California wildfire, or the summer of 2017 or 2018, but a few days of haze and vibrant sunsets are probable.

It'll be a nasty combo because it's paired with pretty extreme humidex values for the South Coast.

It'll be feeling like the upper 30s for inland sections on Wednesday and Thursday, before a sharp upper-trough ushers in a cooler, drier air mass.

And, that'll literally blow the smoke away for Friday.
