A man who allegedly recorded three women with his mobile phone on SkyTrain has been arrested following a violent altercation.

Metro Vancouver Transit Police said it’s recommending multiple assault charges against a 33-year-old New Westminster man.

The man was in a SkyTrain three women boarded at Vancouver’s Main Street-Science World Station just after midnight on Aug. 17, police said.

The women sat down across from the man, who wasn’t known to them.

As the train left the station, the man allegedly started recording the women with his mobile phone, which made them feel uncomfortable. When one of the women asked the man to stop recording them, he allegedly punched her in the face.

He then grabbed the hair of a second woman, placed her in a headlock and tried to kick her several times, police allege.

When a third woman tried to free her friend, she was allegedly bit on the hand.

The man also allegedly bit a bystander who tried to intervene.

Transit Police were called after a passenger pressed the yellow emergency strip inside the SkyTrain, which alerted SkyTrain staff to the altercation.

Passengers had tried to restrain the man at Joyce Station, but he broke free. He was found soon after by police and arrested without incident.

Paramedics treated the four victims. One victim suffered injuries to their nail bed, said police, while the others had bruising and swelling injuries.

The man, who wasn’t known to police, was released from jail pending a court appearance on Sept. 26.

According to a social-media post by a family member of one of the victims, the girls are traumatized by the incident but have received good medical care. One of the girls required surgery and tetanus shots after an injury to her thumb and nail section.
