A Hamilton paramedic has died after falling off a jet ski in Lake Ontario in upstate New York.

Ria Vannoort, 32, was with family and friends at a cottage in the area of Wilson, New York, north of Buffalo, when the incident occurred on Saturday, according to the Niagara County Sheriff’s Office.

Buffalo News reports she had been at a party and taken a jet ski out onto the lake. At some point, other people noticed her in the water, separated from the watercraft.

Vannoort was taken to shore, where emergency personnel attempted to resuscitate her. She was then taken to Eastern Niagara Lockport Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Chief Deputy Aaron Schultz said Vannoort was wearing a life jacket and had no sign of traumatic injury. Autopsy results are pending.

Described as caring and compassionate by co-workers, Vannoort is being remembered as a dedicated professional and loving mother.

The Canfield native is also being remembered by both Hamilton Paramedic Services and Haldimand County Emergency Services for her passion and positivity on the job.

The jet ski incident is still under investigation.
