Surrey Fusion Festival 2019

SURREY Fusion Festival was held on July 20-21 at Holland Park. The festival now in its Twelfth year was presented by Coast Capital Savings, which saw participation from over 50 cultural pavilions and seven stages of live entertainment including headliners K’NAAN, Mankirt Aulakh, Busty and the Bass, Random Recipe and Alex Cuba.

 

“Surrey Fusion Festival highlights the best food, music and culture our diverse and inclusive city has to offer,” said Surrey Mayor Doug McCallum. “Fusion has become a summer tradition where the community comes together to celebrate the cultures of the world. On behalf of Council, I would like to extend my sincere thanks to our presenting sponsor, Coast Capital Savings, as well as the numerous cultural and community groups for their continued support in helping make this great event possible.”

 

Surrey Fusion Festival also has market vendors and community organization information booths as well as lots of live entertainment with over more than three dozen cultural pavilions showcasing different countries from Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Latin America, Europe and North America. The Surrey Fusion Festival also includes an Indigenous Village, a Kids World & Sports Zone and numerous exotic ethnic food vendors.

A number of muslim countries also particiapted in the festival, namely Kazakhstan, Nigeria, Albania, Algeria, Pakistan, Indonesia,  Somalia and Palestine.

Holland Park is a park in the city of Surrey, British Columbia, Canada, located within Whalley / City Centre beside Central City.

It is 10 hectares (25 acres) in size and although it is not the largest park in the city, it has been called the "Central Park" of Surrey city centre.

Originally a piece of land that was unused and not landscaped, the city of Surrey designated the area as an urban park and was transformed in the mid-2000s.

As the park is centrally located, it has become the focal point of a multitude of events and congregations throughout the year.

The annual Fusion Festival, Surrey Pride, various music gatherings as well as other civic and cultural events have taken place within the park. In 2010, Holland Park also hosted one of the Vancouver Winter Olympics celebrations during the games.

Holland Park is accessible by numerous bus services including TransLink's R1 rapid bus as well as the regional SkyTrain system, with the closest station being the King George station.

Surrey is a city in the province of British Columbia, Canada, located south of the Fraser River and north of the Canada–United States border. It is a member municipality of the Metro Vancouver regional district and metropolitan area. Mainly a suburban city, Surrey is the province's second-largest by population after Vancouver and the third-largest by area after Abbotsford and Prince George. Seven neighbourhoods in Surrey are designated town centres: Cloverdale, Fleetwood, Guildford, Newton, South Surrey, and City Centre encompassed by Whalley.

Surrey was incorporated in 1879, and encompasses land formerly occupied by a number of Halqemeylem-speaking indigenous groups. When Englishman H.J. Brewer looked across the Fraser River from New Westminster and saw a land reminiscent of his native County of Surrey in England, the settlement of Surrey was placed on the map. The area then comprised forests of douglas fir, fir, red cedar, hemlock, blackberry bushes, and cranberry bogs. A portion of present-day Whalley (named after Harry Whalley, who owned and operated a gas bar at the bend in King George Blvd, (formerly King George Highway) at 108 Avenue, "Whalley's Corner") was used as a burial ground by the Kwantlen (or Qw'ontl'en) Nation.

Settlers arrived first in Cloverdale and parts of South Surrey, mostly to farm, fish, harvest oysters, or set up small stores. Once the Pattullo Bridge was erected in 1937, the way was open for Surrey to expand. In the post-war 1950s, North Surrey's neighbourhoods filled with single-family homes and Surrey (not yet a city) became a bedroom community, absorbing commuters who worked in Burnaby or Vancouver.

In the 1980s and 1990s, the city witnessed unprecedented growth, as people from different parts of Canada and the world, particularly Asia, began to make the municipality their home. In 2013, it was projected to surpass the city of Vancouver as the most populous city in BC within the following 10 to 12 years.
