Are Canadians more polite? U.S. woman films transit goers thanking bus driver

A U.S. woman was pleasantly surprised by the politeness of Canadians when she was taking public transportation in Victoria, B.C. this month.

A viral video that she posted to TikTok, which now has more than 10 million views, transit riders say “thank you” to the bus driver as they disembark. The footage has sparked debate among social media users, with many Canadians saying that this is the norm.

“Do you guys not thank your bus driver in the rest of the world?” asked YouTuber Matt Shea on Twitter.

Other Canadians chimed in, like one user who said it would be “odd to see” someone who didn’t thank the driver.

“I’m Canadian and it’s inhuman to not thank the bus driver,” another wrote.

But residents of other countries — like the U.K., Ireland, and Australia, for example — were quick to point out that being polite wasn’t only a Canadian character trait.

“Who doesn’t thank the bus driver?” quipped a TikTok user.

As the debate continues on social media, the woman who filmed the video, content creator Corrin Carlson, told CTV News she found the situation “incredibly endearing.”

She had been living in New York and “no one did it there,” which is why she thought to capture the moment.

People riding the bus that day ranged in ages from around their late 60s to five-years-old — all of whom said thank you, she added.

“Whenever I do have a video that goes ‘viral,’ when you look at the comments just like in this video it’s people saying, ‘That’s how I do it in my home.’ Or, ‘That’s not how I do it in my country.’ And people really enjoy getting to see how things are different or similar all around the world,” she told the outlet.

The video seems to confirm the old stereotype that Canadians are, in fact, polite.
