A 46-year-old sex trade worker is fighting for her life after being violently sexually assaulted in Hamilton’s east end.

Cops say that on Monday around 2:55 a.m., officers were flagged down by a witness in the area of 353 Barton St. E. after a woman was found brutally beaten in a nearby alleyway.

The victim was transported to hospital in life-threatening condition and remains in hospital.

According to detectives, based on evidence they obtained, the attack “contained a sexual component” and as a result are treating the attack as a sexual assault investigation. They later confirmed the victim was a sex trade worker in Hamilton.

Det.-Sgt. Steve Bereziuk provided an update Tuesday, telling reporters “thankfully a witness had an opportunity to see them leave together into an alleyway and a short time thereafter heard her screams for help.”

Bereziuk said the witness was able to confront the suspect and words were briefly exchanged between the two before the suspect fled the scene.
