R’Bonney is an eco-friendly fashion designer, model, and sewing instructor with an excitement for life. She attributes her opportunistic outlook to her upbringing immersed in the arts, sports, and travel. As a high-school volleyball player who pivoted to fashion, she quickly fell in love with constructing designs with fabrics and textiles at the young age of 15. At the University of North Texas, she earned a Bachelor’s degree in Fashion Design with a Minor in Fibers in 2018. She is currently CEO of her own sustainable clothing line, R’Bonney Nola.
R’Bonney is the lead sewing instructor at Magpies & Peacocks, a Houston based non-profit design house that is dedicated to using “Fashion As A Force For Good” through sustainability and community impact. As a “Gucci Changemakers” recipient, they were honored for their work of diverting unwanted textiles and fabrics from landfills and turning them into fashion collections. Within the “MAKR” program, she teaches sewing classes to women that have survived human trafficking and domestic violence.
As the first Filipino-American to win Miss USA, she shares the importance of embracing your culture. As a voice for Asian-Americans, she opens the door for more diversity and representation in society and was honored to be published in Vogue Philippines. R’Bonney’s mission is for women and young girls to see themselves in her, and feel inspired to conquer their goals by owning who they are.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — R’Bonney Gabriel, a fashion designer, model and sewing instructor from Texas who competition officials said is the first Filipino American to win Miss USA, was crowned Miss Universe on Saturday night.

Gabriel closed her eyes and clasped hands with runner-up Miss Venezuela, Amanda Dudamel, at the moment of the dramatic reveal of the winner, then beamed after her name was announced.
Thumping music rang out, and she was handed a bouquet of flowers, draped in the winner's sash and crowned with a tiara onstage at the 71st Miss Universe Competition, held in New Orleans.
In the Q&A at the last stage of the competition for the three finalists, Gabriel was asked how she would work to demonstrate Miss Universe is “an empowering and progressive organization” if she were to win.
“I would use it to be a transformational leader,” she responded, citing her work using recycled materials in her fashion design and teaching sewing to survivors of human trafficking and domestic violence. “It is so important to invest in others, invest in our community and use your unique talent to make a difference."
Rights to the pageant — once partly owned by former President Donald Trump — were bought last year by a Thai business tycoon and transgender activist for $20 million from IMG Worldwide LLC, a New York-based sports and talent marketing company.

국내 매체들이 놓친 제71회 미스 유니버스 우승자 필리핀계 미국인 알보니 개브리얼(28)의 면모가 있다. 친환경 의류 디자이너로 플라스틱 병과 지속가능한 염료를 이용해 옷을 만들어 왔다는 점이다.
미스 텍사스, 미스 USA, 미스 유니버스로 도전하는 내내 지구 행성을 구하지 않으면 내일은 없다는 메시지를 강조해 왔다. 한쪽 어깨만 걸치고 다른쪽 허리를 가리지 않는 오렌지색 수영복을 입고 본인이 손수 제작한 망토를 둘렀는데 자신이 좋아하는 문구 “지금 아니면 언제?”(If Not Now, Then When)를 새겼다. 얼마나 긴급한 과제인지 모두 깨닫자는 취지였다.
그는 “예술이 우리가 쓰레기라고 여겨온 것들로 뭔가를 만들어낼 수 있는지” 늘 물어왔다고 털어놓았다.
수상 직후 인스타그램에 불사조가 재 속에서 솟아오르는 얘기에 착상해 수영복 망토를 만들었다고 돌아봤다. 곤경을 헤쳐나가면 더 강해지고 더 똑똑해지며 더 힘있게 된다는 점을 믿고 대회 내내 마음에 새겼다고 했다. 항상 퇴보하는 일도 일어나지만 그대로 주저앉을지, 아니면 일어날 연료로 쓸지는 우리에게 달려 있다고 했다.
아울러 천연염료를 이용해 물들이는 것과 플라스틱 병을 용해해 천으로 만드는 과정을 녹화해 편집한 동영상을 올렸다. 또 친구의 재킷과 오래 된 수영복을 업사이클해 이번 대회 리허설 의상으로 만드는 과정도 소개했다.
톱 3에도 들지 못했지만 미스 태국 안나 수에앙감이암(24)의 은빛 이브닝 가운도 많은 이들의 눈을 사로잡았다. 거의 전부 캔음료 탭(뚜껑)으로 만들어졌기 때문이다. 태국 패션브랜드 마니랏이 “감춰진 소중한 다이아몬드 드레스”란 복잡한 이름으로 디자인했다. 수백개의 알루미늄 캔음료 탭과 스바로프스키 크리스탈로 만들었다.
인스타그램에서만 23만 5000개 이상의 좋아요!, 틱톡에서 12만 5000개 이상의 좋아요!를 얻었다.
드레스의 스타일은 독특하지 않았다. 다만 그의 가정사는 각별했다. 부모 모두 쓰레기를 주워 모아 자녀들을 부양했다는 것이었다. 어릴 적부터 쓰레기와 재활용품 더미 속에서 살아왔다고 사진설명에 적었다. “모두 봐주고, 들어줘 고맙다. 바라건대 스스로 값어치있는 메시지가 됐으면 한다.”
방콕에서 자랐지만 생활고에 시달린 아버지가 절에 자신을 맡겨 비구니 스님들과 함께 지냈다고 했다. 학교 등록금에 보태려고 피도 팔고, 포인트 같은 것도 악착같이 모으고, 플라스틱 물병을 모으곤 했다.
미스 태국 왕관을 쓴 뒤 모든 아이들에게 동등한 교육 접근권을 주자고 주장하는 플랫폼을 개설했고, 아이들을 교육기관과 연결하는 비정부 기구 스마일 트레인 타일랜드와 함께 일했다.
한편 참가자 연령을 28살까지로 제한하는 미스유니버스 왕관을 쓴 개브리얼은 나이가 중요하지 않다는 점을 강조했다. 그는 우승 소감에서 “나이가 우리 여성을 정의하지 않는다”면서 미스 유니버스의 참가자 연령 상한을 높일 필요가 있다고 말했다.
앞서 개브리얼은 지난해 10월 미스 USA로 선발됐으나 다른 경쟁자들이 대회 결과가 조작됐다고 주장하는 논란에 휘말렸다. 대회 조직위원회는 조작 논란에 대한 조사를 계속 진행하고 있다면서도 개브리얼은 공정하게 우승했다고 해명했다.
대회의 운영 및 소유권은 지난해 미국 이벤트·연예 기획사인 IMG월드와이드에서 태국의 유명 성전환 여성 사업가 짜끄라퐁 짜끄라쭈타팁이 경영하는 태국의 JKN글로벌그룹에 넘어갔다. 그는 지난해 10월 미스 유니버스 조직위 지분을 2000만 달러(약 250억원)에 사들였다.
