Ms. Gabriel, 28 years old, competed against nearly 90 participants from around the world at the 71st Miss Universe pageant, held in New Orleans. She donned the Miss Universe sash and crown on stage and accepted a bouquet of flowers as chants of “U-S-A” filled the arena.

Amanda Dudamel, Miss Venezuela, was the first runner-up. The second runner-up was Miss Dominican Republic, Andreína Martinez.

Ms. Gabriel succeeds last year’s winner, Harnaaz Sandhu of India. It was the first time Miss USA has won Miss Universe since 2012, when Olivia Culpo of Rhode Island wore the crown.

She moved on to the Miss Universe competition after winning Miss USA in 2022, becoming the first Filipino American to hold that title, pageant organizers said.

Ms. Gabriel is a former high-school volleyball player who went on to study fashion and design at the University of North Texas, according to her pageant bio. She is the chief executive of her own sustainable clothing line, R’Bonney Nola, and the lead sewing instructor at a non-profit design house, the bio said.

The non-profit has won awards for its work recycling unwanted textiles and fabrics. At the non-profit, Ms. Gabriel leads sewing classes for women who have survived human trafficking and domestic violence.

In October, Thai businesswoman and transgender advocate Anne Jakrajutatip bought the Miss Universe Organization for $20 million, making her the first woman to own the pageant in its decadeslong history, she said.

Her company, JKN Global Group Public Co. Ltd., purchased the beauty pageant organizer from sports and entertainment company Endeavor Group Holdings Inc., which had owned the pageant since 2015.

The organization puts on pageants, including Miss Universe, Miss USA and Miss Teen USA. It was partly owned by former President Donald Trump from the 1990s until 2015.
