A man shines a flashlight on a doorknob, cutting through the pitch black. Crickets chirp in the background. He opens the door and the flashlight bobs around for a moment when all of a sudden a flurry of movement settles in the line of light and a pale-skinned humanoid creature charges forward, running on four legs. As the creature runs a terrible clattering can be heard that sounds more like hooves hitting the ground than the soft flesh of feet. The creature only gets forward a few paces before the man sensibly turns to flee and then a strange inhuman screeching can be heard as he runs out the door and tells his companion to go and they have to get off the property.
He believes he stumbled upon the creature known as a “rake” in the urban legends of Creepypasta. This creature is something similar to the Slender Man although usually portrayed as more carnal and naked rather than the well dressed formal suits of Slender Man.
These urban folk stories arising from the internet suffer a “chicken or the egg” effect when evidence and reports start to pop up supporting the legend it is often questioned if the fictional account came first or the unexplained phenomena that sparked the story was always there. Many believe these old folk tales were told around campfires at night but took a while before it matriculated to the internet. This is especially true of areas like deep in Appalachia where internet is still sometimes difficult to find.
