The fire broke out just before noon on No. 5 Road and Williams Road in what appeared to be an empty property located beside the Ling Yen Mountain Buddhist temple.

Craig Sherlock was at Garry Point Park in Steveston, about nine kilometres away, when he saw a massive plume of smoke. “It was quite big, I thought a house was on fire,” he said.

Sherlock drove to the fire and saw firefighters battling what looked to be a brush fire.

“It was an open field, right beside a temple. It looked like a tree or the ground or the brush was on fire.”

A volunteer at the Ling Yen temple said they called 911 after smelling smoke and seeing the blaze.

Staff from the temple activated an outdoor sprinkler to keep the fire at bay. “Our temple was not impacted,” said the woman, who declined to give her name. “The fire did not come over to our side.”

Postmedia has reached out to Richmond Fire Rescue for more information.

Richmond RCMP temporarily closed No. 5 Road north of Seacliff Road and south of King Road, as well as Williams Road east of Seacote Road.

TransLink said it had to detour the 405 bus due to a “road block” on its route.
