Vancouver police have arrested a woman they believe attacked another woman in downtown Vancouver on Sunday night.

Vancouver Police Department spokesperson Const. Jason Doucette said that police were called to Seymour Street near Pender Street at around 6:15 p.m. on Sept. 25 with news of the assault.

Doucette said that a 33-year-old woman from Coquitlam was walking with a group of friends when she was suddenly attacked from behind. The suspect allegedly struck the victim’s head with a small hammer before others intervened.

“The suspect did not know the victim and didn’t have any previous contact with the group,” Doucette said.

“This random attack could have been much worse if bystanders had not helped out by sheltering the victim and calling 911.”

The victim was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Doucette said that officers arrested a suspect nearby and recovered a weapon.

Shaundrea Janette Lynxleg has been charged with assault with a weapon and remains in custody.

On Tuesday, during a mayoral debate ABC Vancouver mayoral candidate Ken Sim said that there were four stranger assaults a day in the city.

Candidate Fred Harding from NPA pointed to the machete attack against a food delivery driver in Gastown two weeks ago.
