Several killed in attack on senator’s convoy in southern Nigeria

Several policemen were killed on Sunday in an attack by unidentified gunmen on Senator Ifeanyi Ubrah's convoy in Enugwu-Ukwu town in Anambra State (south), an event from which the politician reportedly escaped with his life.
Sources quoted by the Nigerian daily 'Punch' stressed that several armed people opened fire on the convoy and stressed that it was "a calculated attempt". "There were about four policemen in the convoy when they were attacked," they said, without any comment from the authorities.
Ubah has not spoken after the event, although a close ally of the senator has denounced an "assassination attempt". "He has survived, but there are casualties. Some policemen in the convoy have died. I just spoke to him. He is fine, but he told me that there are victims," he stressed.
For his part, Anambra Police spokesman Toochukwu Ikenga confirmed the incident and stressed that the casualty toll is unknown at the moment. "There are operatives on the ground as operations continue. The situation is being monitored," he said.
Atiku Abubakar, one of the opposition candidates for the Nigerian presidency, condemned the attack in a message on his Twitter account and expressed his condolences to the families of the victims. "I convey my sympathies to the distinguished senator. May the souls of the deceased rest in peace," he said.
He also advocated "working to ensure that there is security again" in Nigeria, which has suffered a deterioration in security. The insecurity, previously centered in the northeast of the country, has spread in recent months to other areas in the north and northwest, raising alarms about the possible expansion of these terrorist and criminal networks.
On the other hand, the south of the country has been the scene of a spike in attacks, most of them blamed on the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), an organization founded by Nnamdi Kanu in the UK in 2014 and declared in 2018 a terrorist group by Abuja that has emerged as the voice of the Biafrans, not least thanks to Radio Biafra that broadcasts from London for southeastern Nigeria.
