Cabinet ministers changed into black and muted colours of clothing earlier today as the country awaited more news on the health of the monarch.

In a statement on Twitter, Trudeau says his thoughts are with the members of the Royal Family at this difficult time, and that Canadians will always remember her "wisdom, compassion and warmth."

Gov. Gen. Mary Simon says in a tweet that she offered her "deepest condolences" to the Royal Family and that Canadians across the country will mourn the loss.

The longest-serving British monarch and Canadian head of state died today at 96.

Buckingham Palace announced her death in a statement hours after the palace said the monarch had been placed under medical supervision because doctors were concerned for her health.
