Jasper’s Chetamon Mountain wildfire tripled in size in 24 hours, threatening a power line that supplies the town with electricity and prompting Parks Canada to urge residents to fuel up should evacuation become necessary.

The fire was burning at 1,500 hectares Sunday morning, up from just 400 the morning prior , Parks Canada spokesperson Katie Ellsworth said in an interview 11 a.m. Sunday. The fire is currently burning out of control, as on-the-ground containment efforts have been deemed too risky due to the tough terrain and steep elevation.

As of Sunday, the fire was 500 to 600 metres from an ATCO transmission line that supplies the Jasper townsite. By noon, the fire was burning underneath the power lines.

Parks Canada said in a statement Sunday that the fire “low intensity” due to earlier clearing efforts and not currently impacting power transmission to the town. However, “a power outage is a possibility and residents can take steps to prepare including filling vehicles with fuel as gas stations rely on power.”

The municipality was not considering an evacuation as of Sunday afternoon and had plans in place to power the water treatment system and hospital should the ATCO lines be disrupted, Parks Canada said, stressing that the wildfire currently poses no direct risk to the townsite.

In addition to fuelling vehicles, residents are urged to inventory items that rely on electricity, charge portable batteries or power banks, and ensure each member of a household has a flashlight.

The Chetamon fire broke out Sept. 1 during a lightning storm that struck high up the 2,606-metre peak.

“It has shown some growth in the last burning period, but it’s expected given the terrain and the fuel conditions and the weather that we were experiencing yesterday,” Ellsworth Sunday morning.

A total of eight helicopters were bucketing along the bottom flanks of the fire, while fire crews burned off grasses in the power line right-of-way to prevent spread.

“It’s close, but it’s definitely got enough distance away that it allows our helicopters to safely work and put water on that edge,” Ellsworth said.

Other threatened structures include a warden’s cabin and the historic Moberly Homestead. Ellsworth said the fire was still a kilometre away from the homestead, while the Snaring warden’s cabin — whose sole resident has been evacuated — is guarded by structure protection sprinklers.

“The fire has backed down very close to the warden’s cabin, so the fire crew is actually working again to burn out some of the lighter and flashy fuels — the grass fuels in and around that cabin — so the sprinkler systems they’ve installed are most effective.”

Three more Parks Canada crews totalling 12 firefighters arrived Sunday, adding to a complement of 10 firefighters along with a national incident management team.

While the fire is growing, Ellsworth said most of the smoky haze residents of Edmonton and Calgary are experiencing is coming from fires in the United States and British Columbia. A detailed look at where smoke originates can be found at firesmoke.ca.
